How much pain is there?

You can expect several hours of strong cramping and pain. This typically lasts around 4 hours. Most patients do well with over-the-counter pain medications.

Is it safe?

There are risks of complications with both medication and aspiration abortions. However, abortion is 10x safer than continuing the pregnancy.

Will an abortion affect my chances of having children in the future?

No. This will not affect your future fertility.

How much do they cost?

Medication and aspiration abortions are free in Alberta. Your medications for abortion are covered. Medications required for symptoms relief, such as ibuprofen, are not free.

Do I need a referral or parental consent?

No. You do not need a referral from a physician. You also do not need parental consent. It is important to have a support person to be with you for a medication abortion. However, a safe location can be arranged for you.

How soon can I get pregnant after an abortion?

Your menstrual period will typically return in 4-6 weeks. However, you may get pregnant again as early as 2 weeks after you abortion is completed. We will discuss contraception options with you at your appointment if this is something you would like to do.
